* ok ** fine *** great * = readers favorite     G Good deals     O Order Online / by Phone
** G Maison du Vin - 28 East 74th St. - Although it's a miscrocopic store, they have a nice choice of good French wines and all are at fair prices considering the area. These non French people (despite the store name) deserve your business / support  T 212 772-3412 no website yet
** G O Millesima - 1355 2nd Ave - This European based company has a very large choice of wines from around the world and from France. Their list of Bordeaux includes not less than 125 wines! Prices of French wines range from $25 to .. $5000!  T 212 639-9463 www.millesima-usa.com/
*** G O New York Wine Warehouse [P] - 8-05 43rd Ave, Long Island City, Queens (near Queensborough bridge) - They have the largest choice of fine French brandies, wines and Champagnes in NY at very competitive prices. As a Bourguignon (Burgundy man), I am amazed by their superb selection of vintage Burgundy wines (Chambertin, Montrachet, Vosne-Romanée, etc.). Many wine amateurs and professionals come to this place. The owner, grand officer of the Burgundy Chevaliers du Tastevin, NY chapter, and great lover of France, regularly visits French producers and negotiates on site after tasting. The lady of the house (wife) speaks French. NYWW is often mentioned in specialized magazines. They deliver all over the US. They also provide perfectly secure storage for wines   T 718 784-8776 www.nywines.com
*** G O Sherry-Lehmann [P] - 505 Park Avenue & 59th St. - Although they are not French and sell wines from around the world, they have an amazing selection (half the store) of French liquors, wines, and Champagnes. Despite the rich upper area, their prices are fair: you find some good wines around $25 the bottle. If you pass by, take a look at the Imperial bottle (6 liters) of 2005 Latour: "only" $19,900 piece! I like their shopping bags "Moulin Rouge". Some of the people working there speak French including their sommelier, a Brazilian lady who loves France and often travels in wines regions (By the way, sommelier is for restaurant; she is "Chef de cave / Oenologue")  T 212 838-7500
www.sherry-lehmann.com
* G 67 Wines - 179 Columbus Ave - This American store opened in 1941. The choice of French wines is large and prices are fair; it's an alternative if you can't go to NY Wine Warehouse or Sherry Lehmann. Curiously, their website French section begins with "In the Judgement of Paris, Steven Spurrier's 1976 tasting of the wines of France vs. California, the American's won handily". Bizarre way to promote products! Let's be serious: what would you prefer to get as a gift: a Bordeaux Château Mouton-Rothschild 1970 (a Maserati) or a Californian Ridge Vineyard Monte Bello 1971 (a Camaro)? By the way, there were no Burgundy wines in the competition! T 212 724-6767 www.67wine.com
